During the course students will learn to construct outlines, take notes, summarize stories/movies, write film reviews, compose comparative essays, and more. As a part of the writing process, students will learn about grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Many of us are fine and don’t live in financial chaos. However, many people do and many younger people aren’t managing their money well. They feel compelled to spend, spend, spend! Dine out! Buy more shoes! How many pair of feet can one person have?

Precalculus – An Exploratory Course with Applications

Taught by

Karen Felzer Phd

Thursdays

2:00 – 4:00pm

Homework help Tuesdays

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

This is a course for high school students who have completed Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.

This course will be taught using Investigations and real world applications. In the Investigation approach students work in groups to do exercises that lead them step by step through their own discovery process, and then come together for lecture and discussion. Each class will be packed full of activity, a focus on deeply understanding the core concepts and their applications, and often a game or two !

This course primarily focuses on functions. Functions covered will include polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, and polar functions, including complex numbers. Students will also be introduced to vectors and matrices and to the concepts of rate of change and derivatives.

Dr. Karen Felzer has a PhD in geophysics and a minor in history and also teaches history classes at EIE. She is a third generation teacher and, like her parents, passionate about teaching well. She earned teaching awards as a Teaching Fellow and has taught summer school at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has been a homeschooling mom since 2020.

This class is A-G aligned and can be taken as regular or honors. The course material will also prepare students who are interested in taking the A.P. Precalculus exam on their own.

Time: Regular class meeting Thursdays 2-4pm, homework help Tuesdays 12-1pm. Students can attend in person or online for homework help.

Cost: $285 per semester for private pay, $328 per semester for charter schools. Most charter schools accepted through Home School Coaches. The cost includes all classroom handouts – no parent printing responsibilities as long as students come to class in person !

Book: Course reader with homework problems made from open source materials. $15 for printed copy (highly recommended !), free for .pdf. Charter students add $17 to the course price for your PO to have your printed course reader included.

Dates: September 3 – May 27

This A-G level biology course is designed to take the student through a general study of living matter. Students will learn basic biological principles and explore the diversity of life on Earth. They will study the present form and function of organisms, from cells to organ systems, from simple viruses to complex Homo sapiens. There are more than twenty-five hand-on lab/lab activities covering such topics as:

————————————————–

Students 8th-12th grade take a look at Modern American History and the defining moments of pop culture, film, media, broadcasting and television through the 20th Century.

This class will explore the collective memories of a nation, captured through decades of film, music, television, radio and broadcasting. Discussion and summaries of these memorable moments will be accompanied by video or audio clips. Students will need to access Google Classroom for assignments, and grades will be provided for transcripts.

We will explore movies and actors that brought amazing stories to life, iconic episodes of shows that made us laugh and cry, music and the talent that touched our hearts or rocked our world, and the shocking news broadcasts that marked history.

 REMEMBERING THE MOMENT…

  • When Michael Jackson’s zombie dancing video made Thriller the best selling album of all time.
  • When a man-eating shark strikes fear into millions, with just two haunting musical notes in Jaws.
  • When Dorothy clicks her technicolor heels in Oz saying “There’s no place like home”.
  • When the world watched as Neil Armstrong took the first steps on the moon.
  • When Elvis Presley shocked T.V. audiences with his performance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

  • When Aretha inspired generations with R-E-S-P-E-C-T and so much more.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS

This class is recommended to students no lower than 8th grade, partially due to some of the discussion of harrowing news events, discussion of film content and the biographical stories about Hollywood and music stars that as you might expect can include themes of violence, drug use, death, etc.  There is no way to cover the subject of iconic films in modern times, without discussing the impact of certain significant  “R” rated movies that made their mark on pop culture and the world (Godfather, Schindler’s List, Matrix etc) However, please know that any clips shown to students will either be of critics discussing the film’s impact, or short clips that will NOT include segments with content that would have contributed to earning it’s “R” rating.

REGISTRATION: Enrollment opens for new students on April 10th, 2026  Simply complete the form for either private-payment or charter families here at  26/27 REGISTRATION Monrovia.Charter School students should follow up with a request for a P.O./Enrichment Certificate to be issued as soon as possible to complete your registration with us.

HISTORY THROUGH ARCHITECTURE

Presented by Schoolhouse of the Groves

Taught by

Cindra Barnes

Wednesday

11:00 – 12:00

Starts September 11

GRADES 7 – 10

COST: $250.00

This class will follow the timeline of Architectural History as it parallels the history of the world, the country and locally. By looking at the relationship between the development of Architecture over time and the factors that influence it we can better understand all forms of culture such as transportation, arts. entertainment, fashion, lifestyle, communication, furniture, business etc.

We will travel through time starting with Native Americans and ending in present day to see how each era is its own testament to Architecture and how different Architects and ethnicities contribute to that story.

Class activities will use such things as nature and Froebel blocks to influence artistic vision and awareness – that basic geometric shapes are found within the outer shape of everything. Once a month there will be an optional field trip to visit actual buildings, neighborhoods and districts to explore Architectural characteristics and styles and the hidden history that surrounds all of us every day.

Students will take away a new sense of appreciation for the hidden history that surrounds us and the need for its preservation.
