COST: $375.00 per semester (discount for direct payment)

We will have opportunities to create, analyze, express and learn from a variety of sources, including looking at modern-day interpretations of myths (Rick Riordan and Marvel movies for example). In response, we will be writing, creating and acting out some of the stories that we read, learning together and having fun!

Reading Dick and Jane

Literature and Writing for Junior and Senior High

Taught by Lilli Witczak

Thursday

2:00 – 3:00

CLASS BEGINS:  September 4, 2025

COURSE DURATION:  1 school year, from September 4 through May 22.

This course is designed to introduce students two literary giants, Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. These two have written so much that we will, by necessity, need to limit the number of their books we read. Also, this class won’t be a sprint; it will be a walk.

Students will read the some of the best literature on bookshelves, while they will learn, through research, the background of the author as well as the cultural context. Did you know that Dickens is responsible for much of the way we celebrate Christmas? Students will learn about that in this class.  They will be given the opportunity to discuss books and relate them to the cultural context in which they were written. In a sense this not only an English class, but also a history class. If a given book was made into a movie, we might watch the movie and compare it to the book. Writing assignments will include biographies about the profiles, historical approach papers, and more. Additionally, students will be provided with tools to strengthen their writing skills. The class will be meeting in person at EIE. We will have a couple of amazing parties that students will remember, with a smile, well into adulthood.

 Books Required:

  • A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
  • Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
  • Jane Austen: The Complete Juvenilia Text and Critical Introduction by Ray Moore
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  •
  • This above book list is a goal which is subject to change.

 Fees:

  • $250.00 per semester ($275 if a charter student) plus books.
  • Miss Lilli is a vendor for: Sky Mountain, ILEAD, Excel Academy, Sage Oaks, Golden Valley, Gorman, Inspire, and more.

AMERICAN LITERATURE

Taught by:

Tanya Robinson

PARENT REVIEW

Assiduously and innovatively, Mrs. Robinson equips the students to grasp numerous literary devices and to write analytical essays.  Throughout the course, students dive deeply into comprehending and analyzing various writing styles of classical literature. Assessments are soundly structured. Assignments are designed so that students have ownership and pride of their learning. Mrs. Robinson is extremely knowledgeable of the content, always available for her students and the parents, and passionate about her profession.   Joyce 5-20-2021

PARENT REVIEW

My daughters had so much fun in this Classic Literature Class with Ms. Tanya Robinson. The level of difficulty of this class was just right for my girls. The class was so engaging that the literatures were brought to life with the way that Ms. Robinson handled the class. Even at home,  my girls were so excited to talk about the literatures that they learned and they would give so much feedback and comments that showed how much they enjoyed the class. I also appreciate how Ms. Robinson encouraged her students to contribute to their discussion of literatures by sharing their thoughts and opinions. I also like that they do a lot of writing in this class. Over all, it was a great experience for my girls and I highly recommend this class.
Thanks,
Lovell

PARENT REVIEW

Tanya’s class covers many period writing pieces. Her projects are creative and they get the students to do a little more than just read a book and write a report. For example, she had my daughters class write a murder mystery story while they were reading Sherlock Holmes. My daughter loved working on that project. It forced her to research how to create characters and develop them through a story, On her own she learned about story arcs and pacing. It was a highlight of the year for my daughter.  Tanya also had them draw “propaganda” posters when they read Animal Farm. Drawing in an English class is unheard of, and she’s not going to draw as a career, but she did do a pretty good job for never having drawn before, now my daughter realizes that she did something she didn’t think she could do.
Tanya is super creative and has her students thinking outside of the box when it comes to English assignments. Her class projects are forcing the students into areas that they may not be familiar with, like drawing or story telling, but they learn about the process and about what they are capable of doing.
THAT IS PRICELESS…

About Me:

Before becoming a parent, I received my B.A. and Teaching Credential in English and taught in a private high school. While there, I taught all four grade levels, ranging from basic English classes to specialized literature courses. The book For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay introduced me to Charlotte Mason’s philosophies and I incorporated many of her methods into our homeschooling. I educated my children at home for all of their school years (K-graduation) and now that my children are in college and/or their careers, I am excited to use my experiences to help other students develop their skills.

PARENT REVIEW:

My son Victor Maldonado took his English class with Mrs. Robinson. I just want to let you know that her class, in my opinion as a Mom, is very good. I really love seeing my son reading excellent books. She’s always communicating with us the parents letting us know how our kids are doing. Mrs. Robinson is well organized.
Because I considered her a great teacher, my son will be taking English the next school year with her for his senior year. She already sent me the list of books they are going to be reading, and I ordered and received them last month.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review and opinion about Mrs. Robinson.
Blessings,
Araceli Maldonado

PREREQUISITE: If you would like your student to be in this class, but feel he or she needs a jump start or pre-start, please consider private tutoring over the summer with Miss Lilli or someone else.

You don’t want to hear your young adult-child blaming you for his or her foolish financial decisions, do you? “Why didn’t you teach me that?” “Why didn’t you tell me?” Here’s the secret….most of us weren’t taught by our parents and we weren’t taught consumer math in school either. Many of us are fine and don’t live in financial chaos. However, many people do and many younger people aren’t managing their money well. They feel compelled to spend, spend, spend! Dine out! Buy more shoes! How many pair of feet can one person have?

This course will cover categories such as: being on your own, earnings, banking and saving, cash vs. credit, selecting housing, buying and preparing food, buying personal items, owning a vehicle, and recreation, travel, and entertainment. The specific topics within the categories are numerous!

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

Students are required to bring their own pencils, erasers, and paper. Also, might want to bring a calculator.

SUBJECT: World History and Culture

VENDORWe Spark Learning

COURSE DURATION: 1 year (two, 13 week semesters)

Students will learn more about the real history, archeology, locations, relics, people, and cultures, that inspired the adventures of Indiana Jones.  We will follow along with Indy through his epic journey, seeking to know more about the people, places and things that cross his path through each of the first 4 films in the franchise: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, TEMPLE OF DOOM, THE LAST CRUSADE, KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL

Each week we will watch a segment of film (approx 20-25 min.), discuss real-life historical elements that are featured in the story, weigh the truth or exaggeration of its Hollywood portrayal, expand the lesson using relevant terminology, definitions, or timelines, and leave with a bonus Quest Challenge for extra knowledge on the subject. We will spend 5-6 classes on each film. Students will need to access Google Classroom for assignments and grades.

  • What are the Crusades?
  • Who are the Knights Templar?
  • What is the Ark of the Covenant?
  • Where is the real city of Petra?
  • What do we know about the Nazca Lines?
  • Is a Sankara Stone a real relic?
  • What is the story behind the Crystal Skulls?
  • Is there a Hanger 51 in Roswell, Nevada?
  • Who inspired the character of Indiana Jones?

These are just some of the questions this class will answer!

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS

The Indiana Jones series is rated PG-13, and parents will be required to complete a permission form for students viewing these films as part of this course.  Even though special effects are before computer generated realism, they nonetheless depict gun violence, deaths, gross-out scenes with bugs, snakes, and blood, incinerations, and temple torture scenes that can be quite gruesome.  There is also a little salty language on occasion. To read more about the content of this film series, I recommend CommonSenseMedia.org for their age-based reviews or the Parents Guide at IMDB.com

REGISTRATION: Opens on April 10th.  Simply complete the form for either private-payment or charter families here at  WeSparkLearning.com  . Charter School students should follow up with a request a P.O./Enrichment Certificate to be issued as soon as possible to complete your registration with us.

    Taught by

    Cindra Barnes

    Wednesday

    11:00 – 12:00

    Starts September 11

    GRADES 7 – 10

    COST: $250.00

This class will follow the timeline of Architectural History as it parallels the history of the world, the country and locally. By looking at the relationship between the development of Architecture over time and the factors that influence it we can better understand all forms of culture such as transportation, arts. entertainment, fashion, lifestyle, communication, furniture, business etc.

We will travel through time starting with Native Americans and ending in present day to see how each era is its own testament to Architecture and how different Architects and ethnicities contribute to that story.

Class activities will use such things as nature and Froebel blocks to influence artistic vision and awareness – that basic geometric shapes are found within the outer shape of everything. Once a month there will be an optional field trip to visit actual buildings, neighborhoods and districts to explore Architectural characteristics and styles and the hidden history that surrounds all of us every day.

Students will take away a new sense of appreciation for the hidden history that surrounds us and the need for its preservation.
