LANGUAGE ARTS

Classic Literature

Taught by:

Tanya Robinson

PARENT REVIEW

Assiduously and innovatively, Mrs. Robinson equips the students to grasp numerous literary devices and to write analytical essays.  Throughout the course, students dive deeply into comprehending and analyzing various writing styles of classical literature. Assessments are soundly structured. Assignments are designed so that students have ownership and pride of their learning. Mrs. Robinson is extremely knowledgeable of the content, always available for her students and the parents, and passionate about her profession.   Joyce 5-20-2021

PARENT REVIEW

My daughters had so much fun in this Classic Literature Class with Ms. Tanya Robinson. The level of difficulty of this class was just right for my girls. The class was so engaging that the literatures were brought to life with the way that Ms. Robinson handled the class. Even at home,  my girls were so excited to talk about the literatures that they learned and they would give so much feedback and comments that showed how much they enjoyed the class. I also appreciate how Ms. Robinson encouraged her students to contribute to their discussion of literatures by sharing their thoughts and opinions. I also like that they do a lot of writing in this class. Over all, it was a great experience for my girls and I highly recommend this class.
Thanks,
Lovell

Tuesdays

12:00 – 1:00

PARENT REVIEW

Tanya’s class covers many period writing pieces. Her projects are creative and they get the students to do a little more than just read a book and write a report. For example, she had my daughters class write a murder mystery story while they were reading Sherlock Holmes. My daughter loved working on that project. It forced her to research how to create characters and develop them through a story, On her own she learned about story arcs and pacing. It was a highlight of the year for my daughter.  Tanya also had them draw “propaganda” posters when they read Animal Farm. Drawing in an English class is unheard of, and she’s not going to draw as a career, but she did do a pretty good job for never having drawn before, now my daughter realizes that she did something she didn’t think she could do.
Tanya is super creative and has her students thinking outside of the box when it comes to English assignments. Her class projects are forcing the students into areas that they may not be familiar with, like drawing or story telling, but they learn about the process and about what they are capable of doing.
THAT IS PRICELESS…

Classic literature is filled with excitement, philosophy, and beauty! Reading works of literature which have stood the test of time develops critical thinking skills, expands one’s vocabulary, and helps a person see the grander scale of life. This class will expose you to great classic works through reading, discussion, and writing. (1 year High School English credit) The class is intended for students in grades 9-12, but middle school students with good reading skills and who can handle the themes are welcome.

About Me:

Before becoming a parent, I received my B.A. and Teaching Credential in English and taught in a private high school. While there, I taught all four grade levels, ranging from basic English classes to specialized literature courses. The book For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay introduced me to Charlotte Mason’s philosophies and I incorporated many of her methods into our homeschooling. I educated my children at home for all of their school years (K-graduation) and now that my children are in college and/or their careers, I am excited to use my experiences to help other students develop their skills.

PARENT REVIEW:

My son Victor Maldonado took his English class with Mrs. Robinson. I just want to let you know that her class, in my opinion as a Mom, is very good. I really love seeing my son reading excellent books. She’s always communicating with us the parents letting us know how our kids are doing. Mrs. Robinson is well organized.
Because I considered her a great teacher, my son will be taking English the next school year with her for his senior year. She already sent me the list of books they are going to be reading, and I ordered and received them last month.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review and opinion about Mrs. Robinson.
Blessings,
Araceli Maldonado

They will study the present form and function of organisms, from cells to organ systems, from simple viruses to complex Homo sapiens. There are more than twenty-five hand-on lab/lab activities covering such topics as:

  • Biochemistry
  • Cell Biology
  • Microbiology
  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • Fungi
  • Protists
  • Plants
  • Animals & animal behavior
  • Ecology

Along with a variety of dissections and modeling, there are student-led investigations that allow the student to pursue individualized areas of inquiry.  In addition, students will learn microscopic and aseptic techniques together with laboratory safety and proficiency.

Emphasis will be on disciplinary core ideas (content), scientific practices, and crosscutting concepts, coupling practice with content to apply the material in a meaningful way to the world, and analyzing & proposing ways to minimize human impacts on biodiversity.  The year culminates in a student-led multi-week lab project with a poster presentation and an optional field trip.

Honors Chemistry is a more challenging A-G level class that explores chemical phenomena with an emphasis on preparing the student for future study in STEM classes and SAT II subject material. Through lectures, class discussions, small group activities, homework, labs, and class lab challenges, students will explore chemical concepts as they apply to the world around them. Emphasis will be on disciplinary core concepts, both qualitative and quantitative laboratory inquiry, mathematical modeling of key concepts, and the process of scientific inquiry. Topics include but are not limited to: modeling the atom (nuclear & subatomic), understanding properties of mater at the bulk scale, chemical bonding, understanding and modeling chemical reactions, molecular & empirical formulas, % composition, moles, stoichiometry, properties of solutions and concentration/dilution, thermodynamics, reaction rate, dynamic equilibria, acid/base, reduction/oxidation (redox) and gas laws. We focus a lot in this class on the chemical effects of human activity on the environment and using chemistry to offer viable solutions.   This class culminates in an engineering applications unit on bioplastics and their effects on the environment. Class meets weekly for 2.75 hrs hours and includes keeping a scientific journal. Honors students are required to do research lab reports on their experimental work that include mathematical analysis, graphs & charts as well as well-reasoned conclusions supported by their experimental data.  Honors students are held to a higher standard, including the use of appropriate significant figures at all times, and error analysis in all labs that are quantitative.
