Inspiring Lives
GRADES: 7 and 8
BEGINS: June 11, 2025
COURSE DURATION: 8 weeks
CLASS SCHEDULE: Wednesdays 1:00-2:00 pm
Heroes inspire others by modeling positive qualities like courage, empathy, and perseverance, and by demonstrating the importance of helping others and standing up for what’s right. They also show young people that anything is possible and that even through difficult challenges, they can still make a difference.
In this course we will:
- Define what makes a hero
- Briefly study the lives of several real heroes – such as Florence Nightengale, Winston Churchill, Malala Yousafzai, Ekkapol Chantawong, Calvin Coolidge, Mother Teresa, and more.
- Identify, write some of the heroes in our lives
There will be a couple of very short writing assignments about a hero in the student’s life and a hero the student wants to share with the class. By the end of the course, some of the students will no doubt update their personal definition of hero.
Students are required to bring their own paper and writing tools to class to take notes.
Fees: $160 ($185 if a charter student). Family discount: $140 for each additional child.

Manners Matter
GRADES: 4 and up.
BEGINS: June 11, 2025
COURSE DURATION: 8 weeks
CLASS SCHEDULE: Wednesdays 12:00-1:00 pm
LOCATION: EIE Resource Center, 2640 S. Myrtle Ave., Monrovia
A popular meme on Facebook reads, “Words or expressions no longer used.” People are supposed to answer in the comments section. One of the more popular answers is “please and thank you.” Is this funny? Sad? True? We can change this.
Good manners foster respectful interactions and enhance social skills, boosting self-esteem and confidence. They contribute to academic and professional success by improving communication skills. Ultimately, children with good manners are likely to become well-adjusted adults who positively impact society.
Some of the topics this class endeavors to cover are making a good first and last impression, making introductions/conversations, public manners, what to wear, RSVPs and thank you notes, cell phones and e-mail, how to host, how to be a welcome guest, and table manners….Seems like quite a bit in only 8 weeks. We might have a little party on the last day to show-off, discreetly of course, our manners.
Students are required to bring their own paper and writing tools to class to take notes.
Fees: $160 ($185 if a charter student). Family discount: $140 for each additional child.

Modern Calligraphy…the Road to Great Cursive
GRADES: 7 and up.
BEGINS: June 11, 2025
COURSE DURATION: 8 weeks
CLASS SCHEDULE: Wednesdays 2:00-3:00 pm
Ever sit around doodling? Why not doodle pretty?
Wondering what MODERN calligraphy is….well, it is not traditional calligraphy; it does not follow the same rules. Modern calligraphy is accessible. The writer can stylize letters. Calligraphy is often a gateway to encourage students to use cursive.
The benefits of learning modern calligraphy are as follows:
- Enhanced Creativity: Encourages exploration of different styles and techniques.
- Focus and Patience: The deliberate strokes can promote focus and patience.
- Stress Relief: Many find calligraphy to be a calming and therapeutic activity.
- Cognitive Benefits: Learning calligraphy can improve memory retention and fine motor skills.
Here is what Miss Lilli has personally learned from modern calligraphy:
- -Practice helps
- -Self-control
- -Discipline
-And as Miss Lilli tells herself, “Move the pen more (fill in the blank) after all you’re the one with the pen in your hand. You need to change what you’re doing to improve. No one else can do it for you.”
Modern calligraphy is useful. Often, people are hired to use their calligraphy skills to hand letter invitations, signs, etc. Some people even go on to teach modern calligraphy classes!
Fees: $160 ($185 if a charter student) plus a one-time materials fee of $10.00.
Please contact Miss Lilli to let her know that you are signing up, so she can order the class supplies.

American History Through Music!
(Songs & Stories!)
WEDNESDAY 1:30 – 2:30
Appropriate for grades K-8. Older music lovers are welcome! Younger children are welcome with a parent.
Traditional American songs, which include folk songs from around the world, were once known by every schoolchild. Although they are foundational to an understanding of American literature, culture and history, our public schools dropped almost all of them in the 1970s, along with the fun and historical understanding they include.
In this class we will learn traditional songs from American history and the history/stories behind them. We will do a lot of singing, clapping and moving with great music while learning about American History. Carolyn majored in Music History and has been a song leader for several decades. End your week with music, fun and history!
COST: FREE

Students will learn to play the game of Chess and learn winning strategies. They will become prepared for tournament play which is organized by Coach Jeff. Tournament play is not required but is an added bonus.
Chess is a wonderful game that helps children develop mental discipline, analytical skills, strategic thinking, and do better academically. Studies have shown that students studying Chess demonstrated a marked development of their verbal and math aptitudes. This class is a great way for kids to have fun, improve in Chess, and make new friends.

SUBJECT: Music (Suzuki Violin and Viola)
VENDOR: Jessica Chen, Horizon Music Studio
CLASS INFORMATION:
Kickstart your musical journey this summer! Students will learn the basics of how to care for and hold their violins and violas, and will also learn several simple songs. This class will provide a basic introduction to playing violin and viola using the Suzuki Method, and will continue with group classes in the 2025-2026 school year. Students are highly encouraged to sign up for individual lessons in nearby San Gabriel, and this will be a prerequisite to joining the 2025-2026 school year group class. Students will learn violin and viola following principles from the Suzuki Method. Group classes and lessons are taught by Ms. Jessica Chen, an experienced violin and viola teacher with extensive teacher training in the Suzuki Method.
The Suzuki Method
At the heart of the Suzuki Method are the core beliefs that music education serves as a powerful vehicle for character development, and that every child has the ability to develop musical ability. Also called the “mother-tongue method”, Dr. Suzuki’s innovative approach to music learning follows the steps of language acquisition: listening, speaking (playing), and then reading. In the Suzuki Method, learning music is a family experience through the ‘Suzuki Triangle’ partnership between teacher, parents, and student.
In the Suzuki Method:
- Parents play an active role in the learning process by attending lessons, group classes, and supporting home practice and listening
- Students listen to music and practice at home regularly to support growth and learning to play by ear; students learn to read music after building comfort with the instrument
- Musical development is cultivated step by step in a nurturing environment, and the learning process is celebrated at each step along the way
- Students perform with joy and confidence, with regular performance opportunities in both solo and group settings
Parents should attend the group class to observe and learn how to support practicing at home. To learn more about the Suzuki Method and individual violin & viola lessons, please visit www.horizon-music-studio.com
