Two Parts To The Class:
• Rhythm
• Music Theory

1) Rhythm – you will learn the basics of rhythm. Rhythm for sure can be intimidating, but with my method you will learn to breakdown and count all the rhythms needed to
be a good reader. Throughout this course you will learn the difference between whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes and triplets. We will sing the
rhythms and learn to use a metronome to help develop a good sense of time.

2) Music Theory – We will start from the very basic concepts and move our way into major scales and key signatures. Here are some of the areas we will be covering:
• What is a Staff – Clef – Time Signature
• The names of the notes in the staff
• What is a grand staff
• What is an interval
• Key signatures
• The major scale
• Basic solfeggi – sight singing ( Do – Re – Mi )

Supplies: You will need a pencil and staff paper to take notes.

My Information:
I have had over 40 years experience as a professional musician and have taught for 26 years at the Los Angeles College of Music in Pasadena. I had the pleasure of teaching many students in a lot of different classes (I also wrote a lot of the curriculum for those classes). I have taught 5 levels of harmony and theory and I not only understand the material really well, but I am also very good at making it easy to understand. Theory is at the core of music and it is very important to have a good grip on it if you want to become a good musician.

ABOUT ME:

A home school alum myself, I now hold a B.A. in Film Production and an M.F.A. in Screenwriting from the University of Southern California’s prestigious School of Cinematic Arts where I received the Edward Small Writing Award. My work has screened at the 2021 LA Shorts International Film Festival and won “Best Screenplay” at the 2019 iFilm Festival.

I have also spent the last five years working as an educator, including tutoring students from middle school to college. I strive to help my students creatively explore while promoting the philosophy that progress is more valuable than perfection. This year, I’m especially excited to be able to offer a hands-on approach to learning film making as I believe its one of the most powerful (and most fun) storytelling tools we have.

The added benefits of this incredible series of classes are:  It builds the student’s self esteem and self image.  It teaches discipline and focus as well as teaching students to use their creativity and imagination.  It empowers the students to be able to speak in front of a group with great confidence and improves memorization, improvisation and even helps develop a sense of humor.

From start to finish all students will learn the art of comedy, drama, two-party scene study, cold-reading, monologue technique, comedy improvisation as applied to on-camera film and television performances as well as commercial techniques.  Every month is a different acting theme.  This course is the Real Thing, and if acting professionally is the goal, students will receive all the skills necessary to pursue a professional acting career while having fun learning them.
