The President’s 1776 Report

Taught by:

Lilli Witczak

Mondays

9:30 – 10:30

An in-depth study of the history and founding principles of the United States of America

Recommended grade levels – 6th through 12th. This class is so important we are making it available to a wide range of students.

 Class Begins September 13, 2021

Course Duration:  1 school year, from September 13 through May 23.

The first page of “The 1776 Report clearly states that “The declared purpose of the President’s Advisory 1776 Commission is to “enable a rising generation to understand the history and principles of the founding of the United States in 1776 and to strive to form a more perfect Union.”

The Report goes on to state that “This requires a restoration of American education, which can only be grounded on a history of those principles that is “accurate, honest, unifying, inspiring, and ennobling.” And a rediscovery of our shared identity rooted in our founding principles is the path to a renewed American unity and a confident American future.”

Today Americans are deeply divided about our country, its history and how it should be governed. In order to appreciate and develop a heart of gratitude for our society and government, we must study the founding principles and documents.

With the aforementioned in mind, this class will include the following main topics:

  • The Meaning of the Declaration
  • The Principles of the Constitution
  • Challenges to America
  • The Task of National Renewal

This class will include some research, several writing assignments, and some memorization. Regarding the amount of homework – Have no fear. A general rule of thumb with Miss Lilli is that she will never assign more homework than she has time to correct and she is a busy gal.

The class will be meeting in person at EIE; however, in the event that this goal cannot be realized we will meet on Skype. ….When we meet at EIE, we will have a couple of amazing parties that students will remember well into adulthood.

 Books / Materials required: TBA

Fees:

  • $250.00 per semester plus book
  • $275 if a charter student plus books.

Miss Lilli is a vendor for: Sky Mountain, ILEAD, Excel Academy, Sage Oaks, Golden Valley, Gorman, Inspire, and more.

Imagine…

…an underwater nation where residents live in bio-domes, and use candy for money.

…a kingdom whose citizens wear shades of purple, and travel by unicorn.

Students become “neighbors” in a crazy Medieval Town they help create, where they will experience many events through the year including festivals, natural disasters, historic events, unbelievable mishaps and some silly celebrations!  As each town event effects the residents, it will serve as the journal prompt for a creative writing assignment for the week.

  •  “Swarms of bees overtook the town, and I…”
  • “The highlight of the festival was one daring performer who…”
  • “The wagon unhitched sending us barreling into the…”

Town residents will start by deciding what to name their town and decorating their own home and property. Each student will choose a historic job that will produce weekly earnings. They can use their income to save and upgrade their home, or buy or barter for additions to the property from the marketplace.  Each student will get a chance to be crowned “Royal of the Day” , and Town residents will talk about and compare stories about the events of the week.  Some drawing, crafts, prize games, and other creative expressions will also be incorporated throughout the year to fit our Medieval theme.

While the class will have some mini lessons on writing techniques, literary devices, figurative language, and poetry, the main goal of this class is to motivate kids to put pen to paper to write with enthusiasm and express their ideas in written form.    Journal writing is done during class time, and journal expectations can be varied to adapt to different learning levels and abilities.
