Foreign Language 2018-19

Beginning Spanish Immersion

Taught by:

Claudia Landeros

Monday

4:00 – 5:00 pm

NEW CLASS

Starts October 8

Fee: $240 per semester (15 classes) paid directly to teacher.

Class starts: October 8

Course Overview:

This class is designed for students with little or no previous study on Spanish. During the session, students will learn the basic language vocabulary and expressions. We focus on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing – all depending on the group’s level. Culture is an integral part of the course and is introduced through the use of media, games, readings and class discussions.

There are two main objectives to the course: First, to give the students the ability to carry on a simple conversation. Second, to provide the students with instruction that teaches a basic understanding of Spanish culture, vocabulary, and grammatical concepts. Homework could be assigned, and its completion is a must. It is integral part of this course; they reinforce concepts introduced in class. Active participation is required.

Bio: Maestra Claudia has a BA in Psychology from Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, in Mexico, a MA in Applied Linguistics to Teach Spanish as a Second Language from Universidad de Jaén, in Spain. A second BA and M.A. in Spanish and Literature from Cal State LA. Her background includes instructing and tutoring K-12 grades, and college level students. For the past few years she has been working as a private Spanish Linguistics tutor and Spanish instructor; she also teaches AP Spanish.  She is a native Spanish speaker and enjoys teaching kids about Latin culture. She incorporates hands-on activities that help keep the class interesting!

Mandarin Chinese

Taught By:

Susan Li & Eric Liu

Thursdays

9:00 – 10:00

NEW CLASS

Course Duration: 1 School Year (24 Weeks).

Cost:  $250.00 / semester.

This course is designed to lay a groundwork for your study of Mandarin Chinese.  Whether you are merely interested in the language and culture or plan to major in Chinese in college, we hope you will share our commitment to make that groundwork a solid one.  By the end of the school year, you should be able to: 1) read and write using the Chinese Pinyin system; 2) read and write 500 simplified Chinese characters and vocabulary; 3) carry out simple conversations on every day topics such as self-introduction, family, hobbies, etc.; and 4) read a simple story related to daily life scenarios.

The textbook we use—HSK Standard Course Book 1—is specially designed for students with diverse needs and interests in pursuing Chinese as a foreign language. HSK, also known as Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì, is an international standardized test of Mandarin Chinese proficiency to evaluate non-native speakers’ language abilities in using the target language, and it consists of six levels (1-6). Passing different levels of HSK tests enables learners of Chinese to utilize the target language in different contexts of daily, academic and professional lives. HSK Standard Course Books provide detailed information on the fundamentals of Chinese language and many contextualized examples of basic characters and sentence patterns. The lessons are planned and carried out with abundant exercises on discrete language points as well as skill-building synthesized activities, which will help you put your knowledge into practice and see the connection between language study and real communication. The overarching learning goal of this Chinese course is to strengthen your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, which are approached as an integrated and mutually reinforcing whole.

Required Materials: HSK Standard Course Books 1.

ASL classes are typically a year long (2 semester) course.  For the 2018-2019 school year these classes will be a 2 hour a week class, staring in the Spring, instead of the normal 1 hour a week class to compensate for the loss of time in first semester. Two semesters will be taught in one semester but the pacing will still follow students needs as to not overwhelm them. Prices will reflect this adjustment as well.  The following school year, 2019-2020, classes will return to one hour a week for fall and spring semester.
Date and times of classes are TBA.

If you are interested in taking ASL 1 or ASL 2 please contact me so we can be in touch.
